Walking up the river is a phrase from old times when wind or oars were the only power for boats. If a sailing ship was becalmed, the only way to get in from the harbor to the docks up-river was to launch a dingy with the anchor and the "rode rope" and row up river, drop anchor, and have the crew pull the rope from on-board ship, thereby "walking" the ship up the river. I wrote this song in about 1 hour, but it took 3 months to get it to where it is today.
